“The name never changed. To this day, everyone still calls it Talbiyeh.”
Talbiyeh rose in the 1920s and 30s on land bought from the Greek Orthodox Patriarchate, built by affluent Christian Arab families who raised elegant villas among mulberry and olive trees — Renaissance, Moorish, and Arab styles side by side.
Then and now
A neighborhood renamed, a name that stayed
After 1948 it was officially renamed Komemiyut, but the name never took hold. Today it remains one of Jerusalem’s most storied addresses, home to the Jerusalem Theatre and the President’s official residence, and a short walk from the Old City.
