Built by two brothers, shared by a whole street

The story of Hovevei Zion 9 and 11, and of the well between them

Villa Talbiyeh began as a pair of twin houses — Hovevei Zion 9 and Hovevei Zion 11 — built by two Armenian brothers on one of the very first streets to rise outside the walls of the Old City.

Between the two buildings stood a well and its pump, and for decades it was the well the whole neighborhood came to draw water from — not just a house, but something closer to the street’s beating heart.

The well still stands today, and its restoration is now underway — a small piece of Talbiyeh’s history, kept alive.

Talbiyeh, the old quarter — a neighborhood of stone houses and shared wells.

Retreats · Gan Shalom

A garden of peace, for every season of a woman's life

Thursday afternoon to Sunday morning, a small circle of women gathers inside the walls of a hundred-year-old home — to slow down, to move, to meditate, and simply to be. Tap the fruit that speaks to you.

The neighborhood

“The name never changed. To this day, everyone still calls it Talbiyeh.”

Talbiyeh rose in the 1920s and 30s on land bought from the Greek Orthodox Patriarchate, built by affluent Christian Arab families who raised elegant villas among mulberry and olive trees — Renaissance, Moorish, and Arab styles side by side.

After 1948 it was officially renamed Komemiyut, but the name never took hold. Today it remains one of Jerusalem’s most storied addresses, home to the Jerusalem Theatre and the President’s official residence, and a short walk from the Old City.

Events

Villa Talbiyeh is available to host private gatherings — from family celebrations to intimate events — in a setting where history and warmth are already built into the walls.

We’ve celebrated our own children’s bar mitzvahs here, and we’d be glad to help you host yours.
